What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peel treatments can be used to exfoliate areas including the face, neck, or hands. Chemical peels result in a brighter appearance as they uncover fresh, healthy skin. By removing the outermost skin cells, peels can target a variety of skin flaws, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Crows’ feet and smile lines
  • Minor surgical scarring
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Freckles
  • Age spots or sunspots
  • Melasma
  • Dull texture and skin tone
  • Sagging skin
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Precancerous skin growths

Levels of Chemical Peels

The Chemical Peel treatment comes in a variety of strengths:

Mild: Also known as a superficial peel, this procedure removes the outermost layer of skin and can be completed in under an hour, making it a convenient option that can easily fit into your schedule. A mild chemical solution such as alpha-hydroxy acid will be used to address coarse skin and minor discoloration. Repeated procedures can be completed every two to five weeks as necessary.

Medium: For more moderate skin conditions such as age spots, freckles, acne scars, and fine lines and wrinkles, a stronger chemical solution will be used. Our doctor will apply glycolic or trichloroacetic acid to remove the outer layer of skin and the upper part of your middle layer of skin. This procedure can be repeated every three weeks until the desired results are attained.

Deep: During this procedure, our provider will apply the phenol or trichloroacetic acid to treat moderate to severe skin damage and deep wrinkles. Chemical peels at this level must only be completed once but will penetrate the middle to deep layers of the skin to dramatically improve its appearance. Deep chemical peels may not be suitable for patients with darker skin tones.

What to Expect on the Day of Chemical Peels

When it’s time for your Chemical Peel, we will make sure that you are comfortable in our reclining chair. The esthetician will first clean your skin to remove the dirt and oil. Next, they will apply a chemical solution to the outer layer of your skin, during which you may feel a numbing or tingling sensation. The solution is left on your skin for a predetermined amount of time before it is washed off with a gentle cleanser. For deeper peels, we may offer an ice pack or hand fan to alleviate any pain or discomfort after your peel.

Following your treatment, you can expect redness, tightness, and dry, flaking skin. As your skin peels, try to use a gentle cleanser and sunscreen. Avoid using harsh skin products like retinoids and acids. You should also try to limit sun exposure. You may be tempted to pick at your skin as it peels, but this can lead to scarring. Let the peeling happen naturally.

Don’t wear makeup until you have been cleared by our practice. You can expect to have to wait a week or longer. Patients are also advised to avoid strenuous exercise that can lead to excessive sweating during the peeling process.

Chemical Peel FAQs

Are Chemical Peels painful?

The level of pain or discomfort you experience is strongly determined by the strength of your peel. Most patients don’t find mild peels to be painful, but they do leave you reddened for a few days as if you had a sunburn. Deep chemical peels can often lead to swelling and redness, with some potential throbbing and swelling. Any pain or discomfort felt post-treatment can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication, but if you find yourself overwhelmed with pain, please contact us immediately.

How many appointments will I need?

The number of treatment sessions is determined by the degree of skin care you require and the strength level of your treatment. Deeper peels are usually performed only once, whereas medium peels may be repeated every three to nine months. If you get a mild peel, you may require three to six sessions spaced one month apart to achieve your desired results.

How long until I see results?

Your face will likely be swollen and red after your first session, but over the next week or two, these side effects will subside and you should be able to see better results. If you are doing a mild peel, you will see better results the more often you come in, however, you will still be able to see visible changes from your first session as the swelling goes away.

Can I combine Chemical Peels with other procedures?

Many of our Chemical Peel patients in the greater Atlanta area will combine their treatment with Microneedling, and while they can’t be performed at the same time, the two procedures together lead to excellent results. You may also be interested in getting PRP or a HydraFacial for fuller or cleaner skin. If you are looking to achieve a certain result, please discuss it with your Aesthetician during your consultation for their expert recommendations.

What are the risks associated with Chemical Peels?

Choosing a trusted medical professional such as Dr. Galitzin to perform your treatment can significantly reduce your risk for complications, however, the possible side effects of chemical peels include:
  • Changes in skin color
  • Heart damage
  • Infection
  • Kidney damage
  • Liver damage
  • Redness
  • Scabbing
  • Scarring
  • Swelling
