What Causes Acne?

Acne occurs when your hair follicles become clogged with oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. Acne can take many forms, including whiteheads, blackheads, and cystic lesions. Hormonal changes, excess sebum production, bacteria, and inflammation can all contribute to the formation of acne.

How Skin Care at 5th Ave. Can Help

Based on your needs, our doctor and medical aestheticians can create a custom acne treatment plan to help you achieve clearer, healthier skin. These plans can involve:

  • Forever Clear® BBL® — Forever Clear BBL uses a laser to destroy acne-causing bacteria, reduce inflammation and redness, and stimulate the body’s healing response. This treatment is a good alternative to expensive topical creams, and medication that contains ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, which can cause irritation in some patients. Forever Clear BBL is fast, comfortable, and non-invasive — with visible results after just one treatment.
  • PicoSure™ FOCUS™ and Fraxel® Laser Treatments — Our office uses PicoSure™ FOCUS™ and Fraxel® laser treatments to penetrate the skin and trigger the body’s natural healing response. The bursts of energy also help to get rid of pigment in the skin to fade acne scars and hyperpigmentation. These lasers also encourage the production of collagen.
  • Microdermabrasion — Microdermabrasion involves the use of a special handheld tool that is used to apply microcrystals that remove the outermost layer of skin cells, triggering the growth of new skin tissue. The treatment can reduce acne and acne scars, remove blackheads, and provide a smoother skin texture.
  • Radiofrequency Microneedling — RF microneedling is a treatment that uses small sterilized needles to create small injuries in the skin, triggering the body’s healing response and stimulating the production of collagen. This treatment can reduce scars and hyperpigmentation caused by acne. The treatment also has other cosmetic benefits, like smoothing wrinkles and fading age spots.
  • Chemical Peels — A chemical peel exfoliates or removes the outermost layer of skin with the use of a chemical solution. Superficial peels can reduce acne, while deeper chemical peels can reduce acne scars.

*It is important to note that these treatments may cause your skin to look red or irritated immediately after each session, but your complexion will gradually improve as your skin heals.

Treating Acne

  • Using Over-the-Counter Products — As a first step, many turn to over-the-counter products, typically cleansers and topical creams that contain medications like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and retinoids. For some women, hormonal contraceptives can help clear acne. However, this isn’t enough for all patients, and treating acne can be a time-sensitive issue because pimples can lead to scarring.
  • Scheduling Professional Treatments — Dr. Joseph C. Galitzin at Skin Care at 5th Ave. offers several acne treatments at his Peachtree City, GA, office serving the Atlanta area. Our team can recommend treatments like laser resurfacing and microneedling, as well as a daily skincare routine to help you achieve and maintain clear, healthy skin. If you or someone you love is suffering from acne, we are prepared to help.

Maintain Your Results

  • Create a Skin Care Routine — A daily skincare routine can keep your skin healthy. Our team can recommend specific products (like those containing benzoyl peroxide, if it does not irritate your skin) to use on a daily basis to clean your skin. We can make recommendations based on your skin type, specific concerns, and budget.
  • Make Dietary Changes — Sugars and carbohydrates can lead to boosts in insulin that cause increased production of sebum. Reducing your intake of these foods may lead to clearer skin. Adding foods like fish and nuts to your diet may also help reduce inflammation and the symptoms of acne.
  • Get Regular Exercise — Exercise increases blood flow and the delivery of oxygen to the skin. Exercise is important, but be sure to shower after a workout since sweat can contribute to clogged pores. Regular exercise can also lower stress levels, which can further reduce acne.
  • Make Time for Sleep — Sleep is another important means of keeping stress under control, which can also result in a reduction in acne. Your body also heals itself while you sleep, including healing acne. Just be sure to sleep with a clean pillowcase.

*It is important to note that these treatments may cause your skin to look red or irritated immediately after each session, but your complexion will gradually improve as your skin heals.
