Introduction
Many people want to get rid of unwanted body hair. Unfortunately, traditional hair removal methods can be time-consuming and painful. Laser hair removal is a fast, effective, and non-invasive method of removing unwanted body hair on a variety of skin tones and hair colors.
Located in Peachtree City, Skin Care at 5th Ave. provides laser hair removal for patients in Atlanta, GA, Fayetteville, Newnan, and surrounding areas. Below, we’ve included our guide to the non-surgical treatment.
Laser hair removal uses safe cosmetic laser technology to heat the hair follicle down to the root, impeding its ability to grow hair. After a series of treatments that target hairs at different stages of the growth cycle, your hair follicles will no longer be able to produce hairs or will only be able to produce thin, tiny hairs that are less noticeable.
Many patients use laser hair removal to target unwanted facial hair on the upper lip, chin, and in the space between the eyebrows. You can also experience the benefits of this procedure in other areas of the body, including the neck, back, arms, underarms, legs, and bikini area.
Skin Care at 5th Ave. uses the FDA-approved Icon™ IPL handheld laser. The lasers from this device identify the dark pigments in the hair and target the cells that are responsible for hair growth, leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
Although laser hair removal does not permanently remove all hair, it does provide a permanent reduction in overall hair growth.
If you are tired of spending your time shaving, waxing, and tweezing unwanted hair from your face, neck, back, underarms, legs, or bikini area, you can benefit from laser hair removal. Though this is a laser treatment, it’s safe for men and women of all skin colors.
Since the laser targets dark pigments, individuals with lighter skin who want to remove dark hair may have the best results. Our team can determine if you’re a good candidate for this hair removal treatment during your consultation.
First Step
If you’re in the Atlanta metro and interested in laser hair removal, you will first have to schedule an initial consultation at our practice. During this appointment, one of our technicians will explain the treatment process and the results you can expect. They will then evaluate your desired treatment area(s) to determine if you are a good candidate for laser hair removal. Our staff will also estimate the number of treatments you will require depending on your hair type, hair color, and skin color.
Six weeks before your procedure, limit plucking, waxing, and electrolysis as these treatments can disturb the hair follicle. You should also limit sun exposure and avoid using tanning products that darken your skin. The lighter your skin, the better the laser will be able to target the dark pigment of your hair.
Shave the treatment area the day before your appointment so the laser can effectively damage the follicle.
When you come into our office for your Laser Hair Removal, the first thing we do is apply a numbing gel to the treatment site about 30 minutes before to reduce discomfort. Once the technician is ready, you will both wear protective eyewear to reduce the effects of the laser. An assistant will hold your skin taut as possible as the laser technician applies the handheld laser to the treatment area.
This laser can be adjusted according to your skin color, as well as the color, thickness, and location of the hair being treated. Many patients report that the laser feels warm or similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. The light from the laser passes through the skin and heats the hair follicle, damaging it to impede hair growth. Finally, an anti-inflammatory cream or cool compress may be used to ease the discomfort.
Patients typically see an immediate reduction in visible hair after a single treatment and complete elimination of unwanted hair over the course of about four to six treatments. However, individual results will vary. Some patients will require more treatments depending on the color and type of their skin and hair, as well as the size of the treatment area. After each procedure, you will experience some redness and inflammation in the treatment area, which should subside within a few hours. Though you may experience some mild discomfort, it can easily be managed with a cool compress and over-the-counter medication. You may return to your regular activities immediately following your laser hair removal procedure. During the next few weeks, avoid prolonged sun exposure, use sunscreen, and follow your post-treatment care instructions carefully.
Hair regrowth can occur within several months to a year or more following your initial treatments, so touch-up sessions may be necessary to maintain results.
